Spirits continue winning streak in 13-1 Senandoah takedown

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem Spirits softball team continued their winning streak against Shenandoah with a 13-1, 5-inning decision Saturday.

"I can proudly say that we have started the season off with having some fun while we play," Head Coach Kiersten Garner said. "With the weather and field conditions, I was happy that we were able to get this game in. It says a lot about my team when they have to be up early to pull tarp and help out with field work and still go out and give me all they've got for the game."

After two stellar games Friday, Spirits sophomore Miranda Barker returned to the mound Saturday evening as the Spirits faced Shenandoah for their third game of the season.

Barker had another good day on the mound, and the defense worked well behind Barker in this game as they held the Hornets to only three allowed hits with two walked batters, and one strikeout.

The Spirits went to the plate, found another groove, and kept the ball rolling by tallying up 11 total hits including a home run by junior Breanna Herman. The Spirits also drew five walks and a single strikeout in the game.

"Being in the right mindset when you step on the field is important," Garner said. "I want the team to stay hungry and keep pushing through like this all season no matter the outcome of any game.

The Spirits will return to the field for a doubleheader Monday, Feb. 18 against Brandeis University at Blixt Field.

The first pitch is slated to start at 2 p.m. with the second game to follow. Come out and support the Spirits in their game vs the Judges.
