Softball splits in first day at Great South Tournament

Maryville, TN-The Salem College softball team split two games in their first ever

Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC) Tournament today. The Spirits pulled off an upset in their first game, when they defeated Maryville 4-2. Salem dropped a 5-inning game to Piedmont, 10-1, in the second game. Their overall record is now 12-21 and they will take on Agnes Scott tomorrow in an elimination game at 11:00 am.

The sixth seeded Salem College Spirits kept Maryville College’s bats at bay, limiting the Scots to only four hits. Salem’s Abby Settles (Reidsville, NC) ensured the Spirit’s first ever GSAC tournament victory surrendering only a pair of unearned runs to Maryville in their final inning.

Salem posted runs in each of their first three offensive innings.Kristi Morton (Trussville, AL) stroked a sacrifice fly to score leadoff hitter Shelby Drummond (Boone, NC) in the first.The Spirits added two runs on four hits in the third inning to pad their lead at 4-0.  Settles tallied Salem’s key game winning RBI on a single to left field. Maryville waited until their last at-bat to light their side of the scoreboard.

In the second game, Salem challenged the second seeded Piedmont College. Piedmont starting pitcher Brittany Head allowed only four Salem hits in her complete game victory. The Lions pounded out nine hits and took advantage of three Spirit errors to post the run-rule victory.
