Softball goes 0-1-1 at William Peace

Raleigh, NC-For the second straight day, the Salem College softball team had to shorten a game where they were tied due to darkness. William Peace escaped with a 5-3 win in game 1 of the doubleheader, while the two teams battled back and forth in an 8-8 tie in game 2. Jennifer Vitarelli led Salem with four hits today. The Spirits are now 0-2-2 this season, while Peace is 1-0-1. 

Lauryn Smith pitched in both games and gave up 8 earned runs and 11 hits in 8 innings. Breanna Morris pitched 4 innings in game 2 and gave up 5 runs and 8 hits. 

The Spirits jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in game 1, before Peace scored 5 unanswered runs. Salem mounted a comeback in the top of the 7th with 2 runs, but came up just short. Maggie Fritts had 2 hits, including a double and run batted in. Bre Crumley also had a double and a run batted in during the first game.

The second game was a hitting battle. Once again, Salem jumped out early with 4 runs in the first inning. Peace got 2 back in the bottom of the inning, before Salem took a 6-2 lead in the top of the third. Peace made the score 6-5 in the bottom of the 4th. The Spirits went up 8-5 in the top of the 6th, which ended up being the last inning. Peace was able to score 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to tie up the score. 

Vitarelli had 3 hits and 2 runs batted in during the second game. She also scored a run and a double. Fritts blasted a home run that drove in 2 more runs. Morris went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored. 

The Spirits return home for their first home games of the season. They will host the University of Maine Presque-Isle on Monday and Tuesday in 2 games each day.
