Salem beats New Paltz at UNC

Chapel Hill, NC-The Salem College softball team beat New Paltz St. of New York at UNC-Chapel Hill's Anderson Stadium, 3-2. Lauryn Smith pitched a gem on the mound for the win. The Spirits improve to 7-5-2 with the win.

Smith pitched all 7 innings and only allowed 2 earned runs. She gave up 7 scattered hits throughout the game.

Montana Lineberger had a huge game for Salem. She went 2 for 2 with a double and 2 runs scored. Zoe Wade hit a triple in the game. Smith also had a good game at the plate as she went 2 for 3 with 2 runs batted in. Jennifer Vitarelli scored a run and Bre Crumley contributed a hit.

Vitarelli got the scoring started in the bottom of the first to give Salem a 1-0 lead. New Paltz tied the game in the top of the third. Lineberger gave Salem a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a Smith RBI. New Paltz scored in the top of the sixth, before Lineberger scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning. Once again, Smith singled in Lineberger.

The Spirits will travel to take on Piedmont and Maryville this weekend.
