Softball wins Great South Championships

Macon, GA-The Salem College softball team won the Great South Tournament in dominating fashion. After a 3-0 win today against Agnes Scott, the Spirits finished off the tournament out-scoring their opponents 22-0. Lauryn Smith pitched her second straight dominating game and was named the tournament most valuable player. The Spirits are now 20-14-2 overall.

The Spirits scored a run in the bottom of the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th innings and that was all Smith needed. She gave up 0 runs on 5 scattered hits in the dominating performance.

In the 2nd, Brianna Morris started with a double. Montana Lineberger singled in Morris for the game-winning run. Bre Crumley knocked in Britani Peterson in the 3rd for the second run of the game. Maggie Fritts doubled in the 5th inning, and then Crumley hit a double to knock her in for the final insurance run. Fritts and Crumley were each 2 for 3 to lead the Spirits.

Salem will now wait to see where they will head for the first round of the NCAA Tournament, which will be played the weekend of May 8th.
