Softball splits with Shenandoah

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College softball team picked up their first win (4-1) in the first game of a double-header with Shenandoah. The Hornets were able to come back with a 5-4 win in game 2 for the split. Briana Crumley led the Spirits with 4 hits for the day. Salem is now 1-3 this season, and Shenandoah finishes the day at 3-1.

In game 1, the Spirits jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first, and took a 2-1 lead after the second inning. They would add insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Brianna Morris picked up her first win on the mound as she only allowed 1 run on 9 scattered hits in 7 innings.

Salem picked up all 4 of their runs in the bottom of the fourth in the second game to come back from a 3-0 deficit. The Hornets were able to score a run in the fifth and 1 in the sixth for the win. Lauryn Smith gave up 4 earned runs on 9 hits on the mound.

Crumley and Kierston Garner each hit a homer in the first game. Montana Lineberger, Maggie Fritts, and Britani Peterson all had a double in the first game. Garner and Jennifer Vitarelli hit doubles in the second game. Peterson added 3 hits for the day, while Garner and Morris led the Spirits with 2 runs batted in. Lineberger led the Spirits with 2 runs.

Salem will head to Raleigh next weekend for four games at the Triangle Classic on Saturday and Sunday.
