Softball drops two tight games at Lynchburg

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College softball team lost two close games today at Lynchburg in a non-conference double-header. The Spirits held a late lead in a 5-4 loss in game 1 and a comeback fell just short in a 6-4 game 2 loss. Salem falls to 16-12 as their win-streak was snapped, and Lynchburg improves to 9-11.

The Spirits held a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth in game 1. Lyncburg got a run back in the bottom of the inning, and then scored 2 runs for the win in the bottom of the seventh. In game 2, Salem fell behind 6-1 before they fought back with 3 runs in the top of the sixth, but the Hornets stopped Salem in the seventh.

Brianna Morris pitched 6 innings today and gave up 3 runs on 5 hits. Hannah Nolan pitched 4.1 innings and gave up 1 run and 4 hits. Lauryn Smith pitched 2.1 innings and gave up 7 hits and 7 runs.

Briana Crumley and Kierston Garner each had 4 hits for the Spirits. Morris went 3 for 3 from the plate. Logan Bowling also finished with 3 hits. Bowling and Montana Lineberger each scored 2 runs to lead the team. Garner had 5 of the team's 7 runs batted in, and Bowling had the other 2. Garner and Bowling each hit homers and Garner and Lineberger had doubles.

The season now switches to Great South conference play as Salem head to Georgia in a week and a half to take on Wesleyan and Agnes Scott.
