Softball outscores Southern Virginia 20-1 in two games

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College softball team cruised to a double-header sweep of Southern Virginia in their home openers. The Spirits won 11-1 in 5 innings in the first game, and 9-0 in 5 innings in the second game. Amanda Dacunto hit 2 home-runs for Salem as they routed both games. Salem is now 3-1 overall, while SVU falls to 0-2.

In game 1, Salem jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the first two innings. After SVU got 1 run back, Salem dropped 3 more in the bottom of the 4th for the easy win. Lauryn Smith pitched all five innings in game 1 and allowed 1 run on 3 hits.

The Spirits kept the offense going in game 2. They scored all 9 of their runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Sydney Vaughn earned her first collegiate win on the mound as she gave up 0 runs and 4 hits in 5 innings.

Dacunto hit both of her homers in the first game. She was 3 for 5 for the day with 6 runs batted in to lead the Spirits. Danielle Hood and Brianna Morris also both had 3 runs batted in. Jennifer Vitarelli was 5 for 6 for the day and scored 4 runs.

Salem returns to home action tomorrow and Sunday.
