Softball split with Greensboro to stay on top of USA South West

Greensboro, NC-The Salem College softball team picked up an important split with Greensboro to stay a game ahead of Piedmont in the loss column in the USA South West Division. Salem battled to a 10-9 win in 10 innings in the second game, after falling 3-1 in game 1. Salem is now 20-11, while Greensboro is 17-14.

Jennifer Vitarelli led the Spirits with 2 hits and a run batted in during the first game. The Spirits held a 1-0 lead until the Pride scored 2 in the bottom of the fifth and added one more in the sixth for the 2-run win. Lauryn Smith fell to 9-4 as she gave up 3 runs on 6 hits.

Salem battled back from a 3-0 deficit in game 2. They took a 6-4 lead into the 7th inning, before the Pride tied it to force extra innings. Each team scored 1 run in the 8th and 9th innings, before Salem dropped 2 in the 10th for the win.

Briana Crumley, Amanda Dacunto, and Breanna Herman all had 2 hits for Salem. Sydney Vaughn came into relieve Brianna Morris and pitched Salem to the win with 6 innings of duty.

Salem returns to the road for the road regular season finales at Averett tomorrow.
