Softball splits with Maryville in regular season finale

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College softball team split with the Scots of Maryville and now will wait until tomorrow to see if they are crowned USA South West Division Regular Season Champions. Piedmont must sweep their double-header at home tomorrow with Maryville to keep pace with Salem. Maryville won game one today 7-5, before the Spirits routed them 8-0 in 5 innings in game 2. Salem completes the regular season at 16-6 in the USA South and 25-14 overall, while Maryville is 9-9 and 18-14.

Prior to the game, the Spirits celebrated their 2 excellent seniors, Lauryn Smith and Jenna Van Horn with a ceremony on the field. Smith is a 4-year pitcher and Van Horn is a key infielder for the team.  

In game 1, Salem took an early 1-0 lead in the second before Maryville dropped 7 runs in the 4th. Jennifer Vitarelli hit a 3-run homer to cut the lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the 4th. Salem added 1 run in the 7th, but couldn't get the other 2 to tie up the game. Smith pitched the first 4 innings and allowed 7 runs, while Brianna Morris allowed 0 runs in 3 innings.

In game 2, Sydney Vaughn pitched 5 innings of shutout softball. She only allowed 1 hit in the stellar game on the mound. Salem scored 5 runs in the 2nd and 3 in the 4th to shorten the game to 5 innings.

Vitarelli went 5 for 7 for the day, while Montana Lineberger and Breanna Herman each had 3 hits. Vitarelli had 5 runs batted in to lead the Spirits. Lineberger had a double for the Spirits.
