The 2018 USA South Softball Tournament has begun today, April 6, on campus sites. The tournament consists of the top-six teams from each division in the Conference. The first round consists of best-of-three series hosted by the higher divisional seeds in each series. All but one of the best-of-three series were concluded today with doubleheader sweeps.

Salem dominated William Peace in two games with 7-2 and 12-1 wins. Miranda Barker won game 1 and Kayla Ogle won game 2 on the mound. Jennifer Vitarelli and Montana Lineberger each had 4 his to lead the Spirits.

In the East, top-seeded Salem swept six-seeded William Peace, second-seeded Meredith took two from fifth-seeded Ferrum while third-seeded Averett took care of fourth-seeded N.C. Wesleyan. In the West, top-seeded Maryville had little trouble with sixth-seeded Wesleyan and fourth-seeded Covenant pulled the upset by sweeping third-seeded LaGrange. The lone series headed to a third and deciding game is in the West as second-seeded Piedmont and fifth-seeded Huntingdon split its doubleheader. That third game will take place either tomorrowSaturday, April 7 or Sunday, April 8 depending on the impending rain forecasted to occur tomorrow.

The five teams sweeping their doubleheaders advance to a double-elimination tournament to take place in LaGrange, Georgia as a part of the USA South Spring Sports Festival. The Piedmont/Huntingdon winner will meet them there as well.
