GAME NOTES:

Game 1

  • Salem recorded three runs off four hits in the 1st inning.
  • Sophomore, Addison York went 2-4 with 4 RBI and hit a home run over left field in the top of the 3rd inning.
  • Sophomore, Miranda Baker also led the team in hitting going 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Game 2

  • Salem came out strong again in game 2 scoring four runs off four hits.
  • Junior, Amanda Dacunto hit her first home run of the year over left field for the first run of the game.
  • Hannah Escala went 3-3 with two RBI's.
  • First-year, Brianne Coleman hit a home run over center field in the top of the 3rd inning to put Salem up 5-0.
  • Miranda Baker had a complete-game shut with 14 strikeouts and only allowing 4 hits.

THE BASICS

STAUNTON, Va. — The Salem College softball team picked up two wins in a conference doubleheader against Mary Baldwin, winning the first game 7-4 and the shutting out the Fighting Squirrels in the second game 7-0 on Saturday afternoon. 

"Two good conference wins for us today," Spirits Head Softball Coach Kierston Garner said. "Kayla Ogle and Miranda Baker were phenomenal on the mound, and we also had many home runs, including Amanda Dacunto's first one of the year.

The Spirits move to 17-10 overall, while Mary Baldwin dropped to 5-23.

In Game 1, the Spirits wasted no time, scoring three runs off four hits in the first inning. Mary Baldwin answered, bringing the score to 3-3.

But Salem persisted with another run in the second, two more in the third, and a final run in the seventh, bringing the final score to 7-4. 

In Game 2, Miranda Barker pitched the lights out with a complete-game shutout — 14 strikeouts and only four hits.
