ROME, Ga. – Salem's Breanna Herman was recognized as USA South Conference Softball Player of the Week by the league on Monday, March 2 after a series of standout performances against Huntingdon and Agnes Scott.
Herman wrapped up a four-game weekend stretch by going 12-of-15 (.800 batting average) from the plate with six RBI and four runs scored. The Charlotte, N.C., native managed two doubles along the way to finish with a .933 slugging percentage and .800 on-base percentage. In the field, she had 16 put outs and one assist while recording a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
Herman opened the weekend by finishing 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the opening game of a series with Huntingdon (Feb. 29). Her big hit came in the third, when she found a hole in the right side of the infield to give Salem a 4-3 lead. The Spirits surrendered two runs over the final three innings to suffer their only setback (5-4) of the weekend.
In game two of the meeting with the Hawks, Herman was 3-for-3 from the plate with three RBI, a double and a run scored. She played a key role in a three-run second inning when with runners on first and second, Herman lifted a double to left centerfield to score Brianne Coleman for the first run of the game. One inning later, Herman dropped a single into centerfield to give Salem a 4-0 lead in the contest, as the Spirits would go onto win 4-1.
Herman maintained her hot streak on Sunday, at Agnes Scott, where she finished a combined 7-of-8 from the plate with three runs, two RBI and a double in the two games. She capped off the first game by going 4-for-4 from the plate.
Leading 2-1 early in the first game, Herman reached base on a single to left field to put two runners on base with no outs. She scored three batters later on a single to right by Emma Gaston as the Spirits captured the 5-4 win.
In the nightcap, Herman was 3-for-4 from the plate with two RBI, two runs and a double. With one out and runners on the corners, following a throwing error at second, Herman connected on a double to right field that brought home the tandem of Amanda Dacunto and Jessica Cummings to give Salem a 4-2 advantage in the fourth.
Salem distanced itself in the top of the seventh after Herman led off the frame with a single to left. Hannah Escala reached on an error at second and Atkins loaded the bases by drawing a walk. Hannah Thompson grounded out to third, bringing home Herman, as the Spirits led 6-4.
