WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Salem's Maleah Tate capped off a pair of setbacks to Averett with four hits to lead the way for the Spirits, which fell in a non-conference doubleheader at Blixt Field by scores of 13-0 and 11-1 in succession.

Tate was the lone hitter in the Salem lineup with multiple hits in the first game, finishing with three singles in the setback. The speedy sophomore, who hit from the leadoff position, was responsible for half of Salem's hits in the contest. She followed that up with a single in the second game to cap off her afternoon with four hits in six total at bats.

Tate also made her impact felt on the game in the field with a double play from left field, where she threw out Olivia Jones after catching a fly out by Angela Rodriguez.

Tate led the top third of Salem order in the second game, which accounted for three of the five hits in the contest.

SALEM HIGHLIGHTS
-Maleah Tate, who hit leadoff for the Spirits, closed 3-for-3 from the plate. Tate was also instrumental on a double play from left field in the first inning. Tate caught the Averett runner off first and doubled up the Cougars.
-Salem also received a base hit from Shelby LaPoint (1-3) and Karma Morrison (1-2).
-First-year infielder Carmen Duffey had the first hit of her collegiate career, which came on a flare to left in the fifth inning.

AVERETT HIGHLIGHTS
-Cougars explode for seven runs, capitalizing on seven hits and a pair of home runs. The home runs came courtesy Taylor Sullivan and Abby Owen.
-Mackenzie Newcomb collected a lead-off double along with a triple in the first inning. Teammate Molly George also connected on a triple in the first inning for Averett.
-Averett tacked on two runs in the in the second, moving the score to 9-0, due to two hits. The first of the two runs came on a grounder to short, plating Angela Rodriguez, and the second scored on a miscue, which brought home Olivia Jones.
-The Cougars moved their lead to 11-0 in the top of the third, converting three hits in the frame. George reached on a double to left centerfield, scoring Sullivan, before a single to left field by Owen allowed George to score from second.
-A single to centerfield by Kadence Woodlief scored both Sullivan and Hannah Zabik for the final two runs of the game.

SALEM HIGHLIGHTS
-Karma Morrison drew a walk in the second and two batters later, Madison Long sent a double to left centerfield, plating Morrison for the Salem run.
-The top third of the Salem lineup accounted for three of the five hits in the contest for the Spirits.
-Salem had one multi-hit inning in the second game, which came in the fifth. Teammates Maleah Tate and Shelby LaPoint both connected on hits for the Spirits.

AVERETT HIGHLIGHTS
-Mackenzie Newcomb opened the game with a double to right field, moving to second on a fielding miscue before a single to left field by Molly George loaded the bases.
-Abby Owen delivered a bases-clearing double to right centerfield, giving the Cougars a 3-0 lead.
-Jones connected on a double to left centerfield in the third inning, scoring Owen, as Averett pushed its lead to 4-0.
-Hannah Jones singled to open the fourth inning for the Cougars and moved to second on a steal. With a fly to right field, Jones came home on a throwing error, extending the Averett lead to 6-0.
-In the fifth, Averett opened the frame with back-to-back doubles from Kadence Woodlief and Molly George. George and Woodlief exchanged places on the base pads as Woodlief scored the sixth run of the game for Averett.
-George scored the second run of the Cougars' fifth on a fielding error with Angela Rodriguez at the plate. Owen followed shortly thereafter, scoring on a single to right centerfield by Madison Akers.
-Rodriguez provided the ninth run of the game in the fifth on a passed ball, as did teammates Madison Akers and Jordan Booker, as Averett stretched the lead to 11-1.
