Overall Record: 115-110-2

Scott Long just completed his fifth regular season at the helm of the Spirits' program and, following a 23-13 record in 2016. The Spirits won the Great South Regular Season title in 2016. The team finished high in NCAA DIII rankings in batting average (19th), fielding percentage (24th), home runs per game (11th), and slugging percentage (14th).

In 2015, the Spirits made their first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament after they won the Great South Tournament. Maggie Fritts won 2015 GSAC Freshmen of the Year and Lauryn Smith was the GSAC Tournament Most Valuable Player. The Spirits played at the Newport News Regional and were able to pick-up a win against Ramapo. 

The Spirits finished with a 17-20 overall record, and a 6-2 Great South record in 2014. The 6-2 record tied them with the eventual GSAC Champions from Agnes Scott during regular season play. The Spirits were eliminated from the GSAC Tournament in the semifinals against Finlandia.

In 2013, the Spirits finished the regular season in third place in the Great South with a 9-7 record in GSAC play. They were 14-22 overall and hosted their first GSAC Tournament. In their first season in the NCAA DIII era, the Spirits finished with a 13-21 overall record.

Long has coached twenty players to Great South All-Conference Honors and twelve to GSAC All-Freshman Honors the past four seasons.

Long came to Salem after spending the past three seasons as the varsity softball head coach at Calvary Baptist High School in Winston-Salem. Long led Calvary to a 46-22 record over those four years, and was selected as the 2008 Triangle Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.

He spent three years between 2003 and 2005 as the junior varsity and varsity softball coach at William G. Enloe High School in Raleigh. Long has also spent time as a football assistant at Enloe and Bishop McGuinness High School, coaching baseball at Enloe and Calvary, and as a basketball coach at East Forsyth Middle School in Kernersville. He is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Long recently completed his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education at Winston-Salem State University, and he also holds a Radio and Television Diploma from Central Carolina Community College in Sanford, NC. Since his move to Winston-Salem in 2005, he has spent time working with ISP Sports, WSJS/WMFR, and the Career Center High School.
