Guilfords Squeaks Out a Victory Over the Spirits

Winston-Salem, NC- Guilford College visited Salem College Wednesday night to play a non-conference basketball game. The Salem crowd was treated to an electrifying performance by the Carroll County High School Pep Band of Hillsville, Virginia throughout the entire evening.

The Guilford Quakers led by as many as 11 points in the first half as they hit five 3-pointers. With an 8 point deficit at half-time, the Spirits clawed their way back into the game to pull within two points 56-54 with 7:27 remaining. Guilford quickly jumped to a ten point lead with 3:58 left only to have Salem come back once again. Shakila Springs hit two quick jumpers and Jazmine Gilbert hit a 3-pointer to pull within 69-65 with 30 seconds left. Guilford’s Ann Seufer hit two free throws in the final seconds to secure the win for the Quakers (10-5). The final score was Guilford 71 Salem 65.

Salem College (6-12) was led by Jazmine Gilbert (FY, Fayetteville, NC) with 15 points. Shakila Springs (So, Winston-Salem, NC) and Michala Michaux (So, Morganton, NC) scored 14 points each. Casey Jones (So, Winston-Salem, NC) had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Courtney Sauer (FY, Carthage, NC) grabbed 10 rebounds.

Guilford College was led by Jessica Casto (16 pts), Ann Seufer (15 pts), Tracy Croner (11 pts) and Jasmine Wood (10 pts).

Salem College will return to action on Saturday, January 26, as they host Southern Virginia University.
