Salem Basketball Tempo is Turning Up

Winston-Salem, NC- The Salem College Basketball team hosted the Spelman College Jaguars of Atlanta, Georgia. Spelman College jumped to an early 15-3 lead in the first seven minutes only to have Salem College go on a 20-8 run to close the half at 23-23. In the second half, Spelman jumped out on a 23-8 run to take a 15 point lead with 9:30 to go. Salem responded with a furious full court press that helped them score the next 17 of 20 points in the game. With 2:17, the Spirits had pulled to within one point. Spelman hit 3 of 4 free throws in the final 15 seconds to secure the win 60-51.

Salem College (1-6) was led in scoring by Kelsey Rector (FY, State Road, NC) with 15 points. Alex Ervin (So, Morganton, NC) and Jazmine Gilbert (So, Fayetteville, NC) scored 10 points each. Courtney Sauer (FY, Carthage, NC) led the Spirits in rebounding with 12 boards. Michala Michaux (FY, Morganton, NC) had a solid game with 6 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists.

Spelman College (1-5) was led by April Brown with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Ashley Covington scored 12 points and Carolyn Griffin added 10 points. Kayla Vickers grabbed 11 rebounds and scored 8 points.

Salem College will return to action Monday evening as they travel to Greensboro to play Guilford College in a non-conference game.
