Salem College Wins Basketball Classic

Winston-Salem, NC- The Piedmont Baptist College Basketball Classic championship game was played Saturday afternoon which saw Salem College matched up against the host school Piedmont Baptist. The Spirits went on a 15-0 run midway through the first half and led at the intermission 42-17. Kelsey Rector (FY, State Road, NC) finished the Conquerors off by hitting three 3-pointers in the final 51 seconds as Salem cruised to an 87-48 victory and the championship plaque.

Casey Jones (So, Winston-Salem, NC) was named the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player as she averaged 16 points and 15 rebounds per game. Jones finished with 6 points and a team high 11 rebounds against Piedmont Baptist.

Kelsey Rector led the Spirits (5-10) in scoring Saturday with 19 points and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Jazmine Gilbert (FY, Fayetteville, NC) scored 14 points and was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Shakila Springs (So, Winston-Salem, NC) had her best game of 2008 as she scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Billie Harmon (Jr, Reidsville, NC) missed a double-double by one point has she scored nine points and pulled down ten rebounds. Courtney Sauer played a solid game despite an injured shoulder. Sauer grabbed 9 rebounds, scored 7 points, and had 4 assists, 3 blocks and 3 steals.

Piedmont Baptist was led by Erica Buffaloe who had 19 points and 6 rebounds, including five 3-pointers. Adrianne Lakey scored 12 points. Buffaloe and Courtney Moses were named to the All-Tournament Team as Piedmont Baptist College finished runner-up in the tournament.

Trinity Baptist College’s Brittney Watson was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Salem College will travel to Greensboro Monday evening to play Bennett College at 7 pm.
