Spirits Fall to the Battling Bishops

Winston-Salem, NC- Salem College hosted North Carolina Wesleyan College tonight in a non-conference basketball game at Spirit Coliseum. With 9:48 left in the first half, Salem was holding a 16-15 lead only to see it disappear with a 10-3 run by the Battling Bishops. The Spirits fought back as Michala Michaux (So, Morganton, NC)stole the ball twice, grabbed a rebound and scored 5 points in the final 38 seconds of the half, helping Salem College pull within two at halftime 34-32.

In the second half, the Bishops took control right away as they outscored the Spirits in the first 10 minutes by a margin of 20-7. North Carolina Wesleyan College won the game 80-56, outscoring the Spirits in the second half 46-24. Salem shot only 28% for the game, making 8 out of 31 three-pointers.

Salem College (1-3) was led by Kelsey Rector (FY, States Rd, NC) with 12 points and 3 rebounds. Jazmine Gilbert (FY, Winston-Salem, NC) contributed 11 points and 4 rebounds. Courtney Sauer (FY, Carthage, NC) led the Spirits in rebounding with seven.

North Carolina Wesleyan College was led by Essence Chambers who had a sensational game. Chambers scored 25 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, had 4 assists, 9 steals and a block to help lead the Battling Bishops (1-2) to their victory of the season. Cheyenne Hall and Courtney Brown both contributed 14 points. Hall led the Bishops in rebounding with 10.

Salem will return to action after the Thanksgiving break when they play at Meredith College on Wednesday, November 28 at 7 pm.
