Spirits Fall to the Knights

Winston-Salem, NC- Salem College hosted the Knights of Southern Virginia University Saturday afternoon in women’s basketball action. Both teams battled closely in the first half as the Knights led the Spirits at halftime 28-25. In the second half, Southern Virginia hit six 3-pointers to take a 17 point lead with 5:11 left in the game. Salem fought back and went on a 15-4 run in the next 3 ½ minutes to cut the lead to 66-60 with 1:40 to go.  Forced to foul, the Spirits sent the Knights to the free throw line only to have them shoot 8 for 8 from the charity stripe in the final 72 seconds. The final score was Southern Virginia University 74 Salem College 63.

Salem College was led by Michala Michaux (So, Morganton, NC) with a team high 16 points and 7 rebounds. Shakila Springs (So, Winston-Salem, NC) grabbed a team high 14 rebounds and scored 12 points. Casey Jones (So, Winston-Salem) scored 11 points while Stephanie Wilson (So, Morganton, NC) hit three 3-pointers for nine points.

Southern Virginia University (9-7) was led by Lynette Adams-Schroeder with 32 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Jenne Comp scored 15 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. Tricia Dixon scored 13 points.

Salem College will return to action on Tuesday, January 29, as they travel to southwest Virginia to play the Wasps of Emory & Henry College.
