Basketball explodes in 2nd half to easy win against Covenant

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College basketball team used a 24-2 run early in the 2nd half to explode by Covenant, 66-45. Satavia Taylor (Chicago, IL) led the Spirits with 21 points and 3 blocks in the Great South game. Salem improves to 8-5 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while Covenant falls to 6-5 and 1-1 in the GSAC.

The game was tight early with the 2 teams going back and forth. The game went into the break with the Spirits up 27-23. The 2nd half was all Salem after Covenant closed the score to 35-33 with 15:37 remaining.  The Spirits stepped up their defensive intensity to go on their 24-2 run over the next 9 minutes.

Jasmine Shabazz (Buffalo, NY) had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Shabazz had 8 offensive rebounds in the game. Denika Harden (Youngstown, OH) led the Spirits with 6 steals, while Brandi Wilkey (Atlanta, GA) led the team with 5 assists.

Salem out-rebounded the Scots 48-38 for the game. They also caused 30 turnovers off of 18 steals.

The Spirits return to the road to take on William Peace in a non-conference game on Monday at 7:00 in Raleigh.
