RALEIGH, N.C. – William Peace University’s annual Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament gets underway Friday night with Salem College tipping off against Hartwick College at 6:00 PM. The nightcap features the William Peace Pacers against Emory & Henry College at 8:00 p.m.
The tournament is named in honor of the late Jackie Ammons, who starred at East Wake High School and Peace College before a car crash claimed her life just a few days before her graduation from Peace.
Washington (Md.) College came out on top of last year’s tournament beating the Pacers in the championship game, 58-53. Salem participated in last year’s tournament as well and took down Hollins University, 75-67, in the consolation game.
From Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Salem College is coming off a 17-11 season in 2012-13 and will be led by senior Satavia Taylor who averaged 17.4 points and nearly 6 rebounds a game last year. The Spirits come into this weekend at 0-2 after falling to Greensboro College, 91-76, and Emory University, 69-60.
The Hawks of Hartwick College travel all the way from Oneonta, New York after opening their season this past weekend taking home the crown at the 34thAnnual Eastern Connecticut State University Tip-Off Tournament with an impressive 65-46 victory over the host Warriors. Sophomore Taylor Vonasek was named tournament MVP en route to the hawks first 2-0 start since the 2001-2002.
The Pacers, led by senior guard Crystal Alston, look to get on track this weekend after a tough opening season loss to Randolph College. Playing without two key ball handlers in the back-court while also working multiple girls back into the lineup from injuries, the team was plagued by turnovers and unable to get in any kind of offensive rhythm only shooting 20% from the field.
Emory & Henry will be opening their season against the Pacers and is coming off a 7-18 campaign in 2012-2013. The Hawks from Emory, Virginia were picked to finish 9th this year in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and are led by sophomore forward Karina Farr, who was named to the All-ODAC Third Team last year after averaging 10.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.
The tournaments championship game is slated for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday following the 1:00 p.m. consolation game.
Mike Davis (play-by-play) and Dave McLennan (color) will be on the call for the Pacers’ Friday night game with coverage beginning at 7:45 p.m. Patrick Johnson will be doing play-by-play for Saturday’s game and will also be alongside Dr. McLennan with coverage starting 15 minutes prior to tip-off.
