joined the Black Americans Demonstrating Unity (BADU) student group and the Salem College community on a symbolic walk from Salem's Main Hall to the Benton Convention Center in downtown Winston-Salem.  The 34th Annual MLK Commemoration Celebration is about a 20-minute walk to commemorate the man who fought ceaselessly against the segregation of African-Americans and promoted peace and preservation of life in the process. This effort was coordinated by Salem’s professor Krishauna Hines-Gaither. "We wanted to participate in the MLK Day of Service, because promoting stewardship is at the heart of what we do as a basketball program," said Salem’s head basketball coach, Anita Howard.  "As we develop our student-athletes into servant leaders, we are always looking for opportunities to serve.  This was a wonderful way to celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King and to recognize the work we have left to do.The celebration began at 12 noon and featured a keynote by Congressman G. K. Butterfield from North Carolina's 1st District, who is also a former North Carolina Supreme Court Judge.

"Salem College has made servant leadership and community involvement a core value. This has been such a blessing, because it helps reinforce my desire for my student-athletes," remarked Howard.  "My hope and prayer is that they would develop a selfless and humble heart as women and use those opportunities to be a blessing to others.”  The Spirits are on a 13 game winning streak as they get set to host GSAC opponent Wesleyan College Saturday, January 25th at 2pm.
