Winston-Salem, NC-Salem College Director of Athletics Melissa Barrett announced that Britni Mohney has been hired as the new head basketball, cross country, and track coach.
Mohney said, "I am elated to have the opportunity to help pioneer these young adults on the court, in the field, in the classroom and in the community."
Mohney will take over a basketball program that won the Great South Athletic Conference Tournament this past season, and a strong running program at Salem. She has a history of playing and coaching at three different NCAA Division III schools.
"We are excited to welcome Coach Mohney to Salem College and the athletics coaching staff," said Barrett. "She brings experience as both a Division III coach and player and will be an excellent leader for all three programs."
Salem went 21-5 last season and won both the GSAC Regular Season and Tournament titles. The team advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in program history. They return a large portion of the team, and there are several new first-years that will provide valuable minutes.
The track and field and cross country teams both had successful 2013-14 seasons. Both programs set several school records, and they each have the majority of runners returning.
Mohney said, "It is my goal to continue the success of the basketball and cross country/track and field program, as well as continue their growth and tradition of having high standards for ourselves as competitors. It is truly an honor to begin my journey with Salem College and I look forward to working with the students, faculty, and staff to make this opportunity a success."
Mohney comes to Salem from Keuka College in New York. At Keuka, Mohney was the assistant women's basketball coach and the cross country coach for both men and women for the past year. Her duties with the two teams at Keuka included scouting, recruiting, scheduling, and practice planning.
Keuka reached the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Semifinal Game this past season. They had three student-athletes earn All-NEAC honors. The Storm were second in conference play in the NEAC regular season.
Prior to Keuka, Mohney was the graduate assistant basketball coach at Utica College in New York. At Utica, she was in charge of scouting, recruiting, budgeting, and conducting study halls along with other duties. While she was at Utica, she also received her Masters of Business Administration in Economic Crime and Fraud Management.
Mohney played four years of basketball at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania. She was the captain of the team her senior season in 2010-11. At Allegheny, she won the best all-around player award in 2008. She was a four-year member of Allegheny's Student Athlete Advisory Council. Mohney's basketball team at Allegheny qualified for the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) postseason tournament all four years.
Mohney graduated from Ford City High School in Pennsylvania, where she played basketball and ran track.
"Having this opportunity to join Salem College and the Athletic Department has been a very rewarding experience," said Mohney. "Being on campus, I had already felt a sense of comfort not just from the atmosphere, but from the people who work at Salem College."
