Basketball picks up win against Johnson

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem basketball team earned their first win of the season with a monster day on the boards. Salem defeated Johnson University of Tennessee 65-58 and they out-rebounded Johnson 65-29. Sabrina Shepherd was hot from the field all day and finished with 25 points and 8 rebounds. The Spirits improve to 1-2, while Johnson falls to 7-2.

Kristal Lollis had a very impressive day with her scrappy play all over the court. She finished with a massive 16 rebounds from the point guard position and she also had 6 assists. Quantashea Lewis finished with 11 points and 8 rebounds.

The game was tight for the first 5 minutes, before Salem took control for the rest of the first-half. The Spirits held a 38-30 advantage at the break. Johnson went on a 14-3 run to start the second-half and take a 44-41 lead. Salem outscored Johnson 24-14 to finish off the game. They got some important minutes from Michelle Morgan and Ashlen Rector to help change the momentum back their way.

Salem returns to action tomorrow against Piedmont College in non-conference play at 2:00 in the Salem Gym.
