Basketball falls just short against Virginia Wesleyan

Winston-Salem, NC-A huge third-quarter rally by the Salem Spirits came up just short as Virginia Wesleyan came away with a 67-59 win. Quntashea Lewis had a double-double of 22 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Spirits. Salem falls to 0-2, while Virginia Wesleyan improves to 1-1. 

After falling down 39-22 with 8:31 left in the third quarter, Salem battled 33-16 run over the next 14 minutes to tie the score with 4:25 left in the game. Some timely free-throw shooting and three-point shooting helped Virginia Wesleyan pull away late in the game.

The first quarter was very even as Virginia Wesleyan held a 17-14 lead. They moved their lead to 34-22 at the break, before Salem went on their run in the third and start of the fourth quarter. 

Alexiahonna Bush finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds. She went 2 for 3 from behind the three-point line. Starting her first collegiate game, Tamara Blanton had a game-high 6 assists. Lewis led the Spirits with 3 steals. Sabrina Shepherd finished with 11 points. Alexis Platt led Virginia Wesleyan with 18 points.

The Spirits head to Raleigh for the Jackie Ammons Tournament hosted by William Peace this weekend.
