Basketball celebrates seniors with blowout win

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College basketball team remained undefeated in Great South play with a 97-53 victory against Wesleyan. Salem had five players in double-digits, including seniors Elizabeth Penley and Quntashea Lewis. The Spirits improve to 2-0 in the GSAC and 4-15 overall, while Wesleyan falls to 0-2 and 2-13.

The Spirits celebrated seniors Penley, Lewis, and injured Shaniqua Collins previous to tip-off. Lewis finished with a double-double of 21 points and 15 rebounds, and she added 8 assists. Alexihonna Bush had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Mikayla Seivers had a double-double of 20 points and 11 assists. Sabrina Shepherd had a game-high 26 points. Penley had her first double digit game of the season finishing with 10 points.

Salem had their best start of the season as they jumped out to a 20-4 lead in the first five minutes. They cruised to a 31-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter. They extended their lead to 46-20 at the half. The second half was all Salem, including a 29-17 run in the fourth quarter.

The Spirits dominated in all facets of the game. The team had a massive 52-34 advantage on the boards. Salem had their best shooting night behind the three point line as they went 13-22 for the game. Seivers and Shepherd each hit four three-pointers. Bush led the Spirits with 2 blocks. Tamara Blanton finished with 8 rebounds.

The Spirits play their last home game of the season against Mary Baldwin on Tuesday at 7:00.
