Basketball sweeps weekend Georgia road trip

Macon, GA-The Salem College basketball team picked up two very important USA South West Division road wins to move into 5th place in the division with just 5 regular season games remaining. On Saturday, the Spirits defeated Agnes Scott 58-53, and on Sunday, they clawed back from a large deficit to defeat Wesleyan in overtime. Mikayla Seivers led the Spirits with 53 points in the 2 games. Salem now improves to 7-12 overall and 4-5 in the USA South.

Against Agnes Scott, Salem fell behind 26-23 at the half. They took a 1-point lead going into the fourth quarter and held the Scotties off in the final period. Seivers led the team with 23 points, while Sabrina Shepherd had 14 and Alexiahonna Bush had 11. Taylor Mabe led the team with 8 rebounds, and Seivers had 7 assists. Hannah McBride had 2 steals to lead the team.

On Sunday, Salem fell behind by 8 after the first quarter, and the Wolves extended that lead to 35-22 at the half. Salem had a monster 3rd quarter to cut the lead to 5, and then they tied it at the end of the game. Salem outscored Wesleyan 6-5 in overtime to win the game 63-62.

Seivers had 30 points and Shepherd added 12. McBride added 8 points, while Shenique Pharr had 8 points. McBride had 4 steals, and Mabe and Tamara Blanton each had 3 steals. Shepherd led the team with 2 blocks, while McBride pulled down 14 rebounds. 

The Spirits hit the road again this weekend as they travel to take on Huntingdon and LaGrange in important USA South games.
