Basketball comes up just short against #1 USA South Team

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College basketball team went toe to toe all game with the number 1 team in the USA South West Division, befor Maryville was able to hang on for the slim 56-53 win. Sabrina Shepherd led the Spirits with 19 points and Mikayla Seivers added 15. Salem falls to 4-9 in the USA South and 7-16 overall, while Maryville improves to 13-0 and 21-3.

The Scots held a small 11 to 7 lead after the first quarter, and they extended their lead to 25-18 at the half. They would keep the pressure on in the 3rd quarter and held a 45-35 lead heading into the final quarter. Salem outscored the Scots 18-11 in the final period, but came up just short as the Scots sank several free-throws in the final minute.

Hannah McBride had 9 points and led the team with 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Seivers and McBride each had 4 steals for the Spirits.

Salem wraps up regular season play tomorrow at home against Covenant in a game that will decide which team is the 5th seed in the USA South West Division.
