Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College basketball team finished their 2016-17 basketball team by qualifying for the USA South Basketball Tournament in their first year in the league. The team finished the season with a 7-18 overall record and 4-10 record in the USA South, while Sabrina Shepherd and Mikayla Seivers earned league honors. 

Head Coach Britni Mohney said, "this year we faced a lot of adversity from nearly the beginning of the season. In true Salem Basketball fashion, we rose above all obstacles that we were faced with and never backed down from any challenges. With the guidance of our two seniors Alexiahonna Bush and Sabrina Shepherd we made it to our first USA South Conference Tournament in our first year of competing in the new conference; which is a big accomplishment in itself."

Shepherd scored her 1,000th career point in her final game. She was a Second Team All-USA South member, while finishing second overall in the league with a 19.6 points per game average. She was sixth in the lead with a 36.5% three point percentage.

Seivers also earned Second Team All-USA South honors in a breakout season for the junior point guard. She was fourth in the league with 16.5 points per game. She led the league with 130 overall assists.

Bush earned USA South All-Sportsmanship Team. Hannah McBride led the Spirits and finished seventh in the USA South with 53 steals.

Salem finished their season in the first round of the USA South Tournament with a loss to Huntingdon. They had series sweeps over conference rivals, Agnes Scott and Wesleyan.

Coach Mohney said, "there has been tremendous growth among the players on the team and for the team as a collective unit, that makes me look forward for the future of Salem College Basketball. We have a great group returning next year, as we look for veteran point guard Mikayla Seivers to pioneer our team as we enter the East Division of the USA South Conference.  We will be returning a lot of quickness and will be looking to have a change of pace game next season."
