Basketball explodes to 87-46 win over Hollins

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College basketball team closed out the last 15 minutes of their season opener game on a 51-15 run to defeat Hollins 87-46 in non-conference action. Shenell Pharr and Hannah McBride led the Spirits to the win. Salem is now 1-0 overall, while Hollins falls to 0-1.

Salem jumped out to a 23-14 lead after the first quarter, and extended their lead to 12 points at the half. Hollins closed the lead to 5 early in the third quarter before Salem's offense exploded for the final 15 minutes of action. Pharr finished with 23 points and 8 steals, and a team-high 7 assists. McBride earned a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds, and she added 6 steals.

Mikayla Seivers and Sabrina Shepherd also had strong nights. Seivers finished with 18 points and 6 assists, and Shepherd had 17 points, including going 5-6 from behind the three-point line. 

The Spirits forced 23 turnovers off of 19 steals. Hollins held a 47-39 rebounding advantage.

Salem will hit the road for the first time this weekend as they play Penn State-Altoona and Hilbert at the Eastern Mennonite Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
