Basketball Loses Close Battle With Averett

Winston-Salem, NC-After falling behind early, the Salem College basketball team clawed their way back but fell just short in a 91-84 loss against Averett. On a night fifth-year senior Sabrina Shepherd was celebrated for being the all-time points leader for Salem, Shepherd tied her career-high with 32 points. Salem falls to 9-13 overall and 7-7 in the USA South East Division, while the Cougars improve to 16-8 and 12-3. 

Shepherd holds the Salem all-time points record with 1456 points, which is a 17.5 career points per game average. She was hot all night from the field today as she tied her career-high. Prior to the game, Shepherd was honored for her record.

Averett jumped out to an early 18-2 lead and held a 27-14 lead after the first quarter. Salem cut the lead to 48-41 at the half and then 73-68 after the third quarter. They were able to get within 2 points, but could never get the lead back in the final period.

Mikayla Seivers had a double-double of 18 points and 10 assists. Dominique Cross also had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Tyler Davenport finished with 11 points, while Hannah McBride had 9 rebounds and a team-high 4 steals.

The Spirits will hit the road this week to take on Greensboro and Meredith in conference action.
