Spirits Return to Action Monday Versus Hollins

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem basketball team will end its 12-day break from action on Monday, December 30, when the Spirits host Hollins at 7 p.m. at Varsity Gym.

Salem (0-9) remains of its first win of the season and first in the head coaching career of Quntashea Lewis when it faces Hollins for the second time in this month. Meanwhile, the Green and Gold (6-3) are riding a four-game winning streak which began with an 82-68 triumph over Washington & Lee on December 4.

Through the first nine games of the season, Salem is led by the combination of Alize Brooks (123 points) and Sydney Bowen (103). The tandem is the only Spirits to top 100 points on a season, guiding a unit that has accounted for 425 points (53.1 ppg) offensively.

Lauren Privette is responsible for a season-best 83 rebounds, including 55 on the defensive glass, while Aubrey Slaughter has come through with 68 rebounds (46 defensive). Bowen has handed out a team-best 31 assists, while Dionne Sampson is second with 29 assists.

Hollins has collected two wins against USA South opponents, Salem and Methodist (58-54), which came on December 12. The Green and Gold are 3-1 on the road this season, averaging 67.6 points a game on the slate.

Individually, Kayla Surles (146) and Yasmine Tyler (110) lead the way in points, while Serena Lytton (103) completes a trio that has tallied at least 100 points. The combination off Tyler and Keyazla Taylor, who have 75 and 44 total rebounds, respectively, lead the way for a Hollins unit that has 342 rebounds this season.

LAST TIME OUT VERSUS HOLLINS (Dec. 10): Salem's Alize Brooks netted a game-high 16 points, while teammate Sydney Bowen added 10, but the trio of Lenah Clements (13 points), Kayla Surles (11) and Keenan Surles (10) that proved to be too much as Hollins prevailed with a 63-40 win on Tuesday, December 10.

While the tandem of Brooks and Bowen reached double figures for Salem (0-7), the Spirits knocked down just 11-of-63 (17.5%) from the floor and 5-of-16 (31.3%) from beyond the arc. Brooks led the way by hitting 4-of-22 from the floor and 2-of-6 from 3-point range She emerged with six points at the free throw line and was also active on defense with nine rebounds.

Bowen, who was 3-of-13 from the field, and converted 2-of-7 from 3-point range along with 2-of-4 from the free throw line. Lauren Privette climbed the glass for a team-high 11 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.
