Spirits, Mary Baldwin Clash Tuesday in USA South Action

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Three days removed from its last game, a 69-39 setback at Meredith, the Salem basketball team returns to the court to clash with Mary Baldwin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Salem (0-15, 0-8 USA South) wraps up its longest road stretch of the season, four games, as it remains in search of its first win in program history under the direction of Quntashea Lewis as head coach. The Spirits have competed in nine games away from Varsity Gym in 2019-20.

Sydney Bowen leads all Salem scorers with 172 points, knocking down 64-of-184 from the floor and 24-of-74 from beyond the arc, while Alize Brooks is 10 points shy of her teammate. Brooks has converted 59-of-182 from the field, while hitting 30-of-60 at the charity stripe. First year Aubrey Slaughter became the third player to score at least 100 points on the season during the setback to Meredith, accounting for 106 points in the campaign.

Lauren Privette, with 127 rebounds (48 offensive), leads Salem in rebounds. Slaughter is 12 rebounds off the pace, hauling in 79 on the defensive glass.

Mary Baldwin (9-8, 4-5) heads into the matchup with a 5-4 mark at home this season. The Fighting Squirrels have dropped two straight, to the likes of Averett (51-41) and William Peace (72-58), after winning four consecutive against Salem. St. Mary's (Md.), Methodist and Greensboro between Jan. 5-12.

Demet Saygili (178 points) and Brooke Anders (168) lead Mary Baldwin in scoring on the season with Saygili hitting 61-of-167 field goal attempts to lead the way. Saygili has also made her presence felt in the paint with 111 total rebounds, including a team-best 82 on the defensive glass.
