Bowen Closes With 19, Brooks 13 Versus Piedmont International

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – LeOnzerrae Grubbs tallied a game-high 27 points and led four Piedmont International players in double figures as the Bruins completed a season sweep of Salem with a 92-49 victory in non-conference hoops action between the two teams on Saturday afternoon at Williams Gym.

Grubbs knocked down 10-of-18 from the floor, including 5-of-12 from beyond the arc, en route to her single-game high for the Bruins (15-5). Zyniah Kesler finished with 13 points, while hitting 5-of-6 from the field and a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, while Lexius Houzer came through with 12 points. Alysia McLeod finished off double-digit scoring with 10 points, finishing 4-of-6 from the floor.

Salem (0-22) was led offensively by the backcourt tandem of Sydney Bowen and Alize Brooks, who came through with 19 and 13 points, respectively. Bowen finished off the game by hitting 6-of-18 from the floor, knocking down all four free throws along the way, while Brooks was 6-of-14 from the field to go along with four rebounds.

The Bruins managed to add to their 57-23 lead at the intermission by limiting Salem to eight points in the third quarter. The combination of Houzer and McLeod scored six points apiece, while Piedmont International tallied 23 points in the frame. The Bruins hot shooting rolled into the second half, hitting 10-of-16 (62.5%) from the floor.

Salem responded with its best offensive performance of the game in the fourth, outscoring the Bruins 23-12 in the process. Brooks exploded for six points, knocking down 3-of-5 from the floor, while Dionne Sampson added five points and three rebounds. Lauren Privette was also active in the offense with four points, hitting a pair of free throws in the process.

Piedmont International established its offense early in the game with a 27-8 lead in the first half. The Bruins hit 12-of-21 (57%) from the floor, while limiting Salem to 25 percent. Kesler led all scorers in the opening frame with 10 points.

Bowen countered with 10 points of her own for the Spirits in the second quarter, hitting 3-of-5 from the floor and 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Grubbs was the source of offense for Piedmont with 15 points in the frame, knocking down 5-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-6 from long distance.
