Salem Basketball Season Concludes at Averett on Saturday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem basketball team wraps up the 2019-20 season on Saturday, Feb. 15, when it heads to USA South Conference foe Averett for a 2 p.m. clash with the Cougars.

The Spirits, under the direction of first-year coach Quntashea Lewis, are led offensively by the tandem of Sydney Bowen (249 points) and Alize Brooks (230). Bowen has scored 165 of those points against league competition, hitting 59-of-201 (29.4%) from the floor and 23-of-82 (28%) from beyond the arc. Brooks has taken advantage of 52-of-160 (32.5%) shooting from the field, while knocking down 25-of-45 (55.6%) from the free throw line to score 138 points against USA South foes.

Another key contributor for the Spirits (0-23, 0-15 USA South) in league action has been Aubrey Slaughter. In 15 league games, the Winston-Salem, N.C., native has tallied the second-most points (141), hitting 58-of-153 (37.9%) from the floor in the process, while grabbing 133 rebounds (86 defensive).

Averett (16-8, 10-5 USA South) heads into the weekend in a third-place tie in the East Division standings. The Cougars have won three of their last four games, including consecutive victories over Pfeiffer (82-50), Methodist (82-61) and William Peace (80-68), before dropping a 74-62 decision at N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday, Feb. 12.

Brooke Carthon is one of four Cougars with at least 200 points on the season, leading the way with 332 (13.8 ppg), hittin 118-of-307 from the floor. She is followed closely by Courtney Scott (273 points), Camryn Lunsford (255) and Ravyn Johnson (239). Carthon also tops the Averett lineup in total rebounds (205), grabbing 83 on the offensive glass. Johnson has proven to be a solid complement for Carthon with 200 rebounds (83 offensive).

SPIRITS COMPLETE HOME SCHEDULE VERSUS WILLIAM PEACE (Feb. 12): Sydney Bowen finished with 14 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, while Alize Brooks added 11 points and three steals, but it was Jamesha Sanders' 14-point, eight-rebound effort for William Peace that was the difference maker as the Pacers earned the 70-41 victory over Salem in USA South basketball action at Varsity Gym on Wednesday evening.

Bowen knocked down 3-of-12 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, and was a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line to cap off her 13th double-digit scoring performance of the season. Brooks was successful on 3-of-8 attempts from the floor and four free throws, while forcing a game-best three steals for the Spirit defense. Aubrey Slaughter came through with eight rebounds and seven points in 24 minutes for Salem, which slipped to 0-23 overall and 0-15 in the USA South.
