Lacrosse Makes History With First Win

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College lacrosse team made history with the program's first win. Salem defeated Sweet Briar 8-7 in a come from behind victory. Collette Vladimery was the star of the game with 5 goals. 

Prior to the game, the athletic department honored President Lorraine Sterritt for her vision of bringing a lacrosse program to Salem. The team and coaching staff presented President Sterritt with her own jersey and she participated in the team's pre-game routine.

Flying high from the pre-game celebration, Salem jumped out to their best start of the year as Vladimery scored 3 goals before Sweet Briar had a shot. The Vixens were able to cut the lead to 3-2 at the half. Sweet Briar started the second half on a 4-1 run, before Salem went on a 4-0 run of their own. The last two minutes flew by at a frantic pace as Sweet Briar tried to tie the game, but the Spirits closed the door on all of their attempts.

Cassidy Matlock, Isabella Srikhirisawan, and Logan Bowling all scored important second half goals, while Vladimery scored the eventual game winning goal. Hannah Ostlund came up big in net several times throughout the game and finished with 12 saves. 

Salem held a 25-19 shot advantage. The Vixens had 9 draw controls to 8 by Salem, while the Spirits held a 16-15 groundball advantage. Cecily Wainschel and Lisee Morales led the team with 3 ground balls each. Srikhirisawan led the team with 3 draw controls. 

Salem will host Ferrum in USA South action on Saturday.
