NCCSIA Announces 2013 North Carolina College Division All-State Women’s Soccer Team
Hubbard was the only NCAA Division III player on the first-team. Schmidt was only one of two DIII players on the second team. Hubbard scored six goals and dished out seven assists for Salem, who closed out 2013 with its best year in program history. She was named the 2013 Great South Player of the Year, as Salem made an appearance at the NCAA Division III Tournament. Schmidt led the Spirits with 14 goals and 9 assists for 37 points.
Wingate leads the way with four selections to the first team, while Lenoir-Rhyne and Barton each had two players named to the first team. Rounding out the first team, Lees-McRae, Salem and Queens each are represented by one player.
Ashlyn Hardie of Wingate earned first team recognition after a stellar season between the posts for the Bulldogs. Hardie recorded 1576:29 minutes of action in goal en route to leading the Bulldogs to their first-ever Elite Eight appearance this season. She allowed only 10 goals on the season for a goals-against average of 0.57, which ranks 12thnationally. Hardie picked up 58 saves in goal, earning eight shutouts on the season.
In the backfield, Wingate’s Chandler Murphy is joined by Hubbard of Salem College and Lenoir-Rhyne’s Amber Madriaga. Murphy played a key role in the Bulldogs’ dominant defense throughout the 2013 year who shutout 12 of its opponents and allowed one goal through the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. She notched seven goals and five assists, ranking third on the team with 19 points, and was named a first team All-SAC defender.
A first-team All-SAC team member, Madriaga tallied two goals and two assists for Lenoir-Rhyne, including one goal in the first round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament.
The midfielders are led by Barton’s Emily Futral, who also earned a spot on the Conference Carolinas First Team All-Conference team. Futral turned in nine goals and four assists to earn 22 points on the season.
Also in the midfield are Wingate senior Taryn Grivois, Lees-McRae junior Meagan Thornton and Queens freshman Caitlyn Rodrigues. Grivois was a first team All-SAC selection after collecting two goals and seven assists for the Bulldogs. Thornton posted eight goals and five assists to total 21 points and was named to the First Team All-Conference Carolinas. In her first season of collegiate soccer, Rodrigues was named the SAC Freshman of the Year. She tapped in seven goals for Queens, and added five assists to her offensive resume.
Anchoring the forwards is Wingate junior Jade Montgomery, who made her third-straight appearance on the NCCSIA first team. A 2012 All-American, Montgomery registered at least one point in 17 of the Bulldogs’ 23 games this season. She finished the season with 45 points on 17 goals and 11 assists. A two-time SAC Player of the Year recipient, she is sixth nationally in points and assists, and 10th in goals.
Rounding out the 2013 All-State team are forwards Jodi Barber of Barton and Lenoir Rhyne’s Garcelle Alequine. Barber was named the Conference Carolinas Offensive Player of the Year after she earned 41 points on 16 goals and nine assists. She is nationally-ranked 10th in total goals and eighth in total points. A first-team All-SAC selection, Alequine led Lenoir-Rhyne in goals scored and total points with nine and 23, respectfully.
The NCCSIA All-State second team is comprised of Belmont Abbey College’s Hannah Kohls, Silvia Vazquez and Ananda Gebreyesus, Lees-McRae College’s Sarah Mahar and Kaitlyn Kerrigan, Salem College’s MacKenzie Schmidt, Meredith College’s Danielle Lee, Catawba College’s Sophie Waller, Lenoir-Rhyne University’s Emmi Dunn, Barton College’s Kasey Byzewski and Queens University of Charlotte’s Ashley Osiecki.
Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by the NCCSIA members.
Founded in 2002, The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.
NCCSSIA selects all-state teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, softball and baseball.
