Soccer goes undefeated in Costa Rica

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College soccer team spent nine days in Costa Rica, and they went undefeated in four games. The team defeated CODEA, San Carlos, and Dimas, and tied with Iberia. The Spirits played four games in six days.

Salem began their play against CODEA on January 12th in San Jose, Costa Rica. CODEA recently defeated four different Division III State University of New York (SUNY) institutions. Three days before they played Salem, they also defeated a division II institution that reached the second round of the NCAA DII Tournament this year. CODEA is currently in third in the Costa Rican Women's League. Sawyer Ferguson (Billings, MT) scored the game-winning goal on an assist by Summer Rich (Atlantic Beach, NC). Kenzie Rathe (Cloquet, MN) was selected as the most valuable player of the game for her stellar play in goal.

Salem defeated San Carlos, 2-0, in the Arenal Volcano Region. Ferguson scored the first goal on a Rich assist, and Taylor Norman (Fairfax, VA) scored the 2nd goal on an assist by Nataly Mojica (Dallas, TX). Mojica was the player of the game, selected by the opposing team.

In the third game played at the beach, Ferguson scored again, before Iberia scored the lone goal that Salem allowed. Mojica was selected as the player of the game for the third game. 

Amber Lee (Summerville, SC) scored the first goal against Dimas in San Jose on an assist by Mojica. Ferguson scored on a Mojica cross to close out the goals. Victoria Chaffers (Deltona, FL) was selected as the player of the game. Paige Ketchum (Jacksonville, NC) split time with Rathe in goal. 

The team spent time doing community service on the coast with a local under-privileged community center. The team donated money and various toys and school supplies to the children. Salem also toured San Jose, including a tour through the Saprissa Stadium, which is one of the biggest professional teams in Costa Rica. They also went to a hot springs, zip-lined through the rainforest, and played soccer on the beach on the Pacific Coast.
