Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College soccer team dominated the 2014 Great South Tournament on their way to their second straight GSAC Championship. The Spirits defeated Wesleyan 7-0 and outscored their opponents 23-0 throughout the tournament. Brooke Bukas had two goals and two assists and Kaci McDaniel had two goals in the win. Taylor Norman was selected as the tournament's most valuable player.
The Spirits are now 18-4 and earned the GSAC's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament. They will find out where they play in the first round tomorrow at 1:00.
It took thirty minutes to settle down for the Spirits, and after that the floodgates opened. After multiple near misses, Bukas scored in the 36th minute on a breakaway. A minute later McDaniel scored her first goal on a pass from Bukas. Bukas scored two minutes later to cap off three goals in three minutes for Salem.
The Spirits had no problem scoring early in the second half as they scored four goals in the first 26 minutes of the half. Tarryn Johnson scored on a Bukas assist in the 49th minute. Norman scored in the 58th minute on a pass from Summer Rich. Sawyer Ferguson converted a penalty kick in the 62nd minute, and McDaniel finished off the scoring in the 72nd minute.
Salem dominated the stats as they out-shot Wesleyan 26-5 with a 9-0 corner kick advantage. Paige Ketchum earned her third shutout of the tournament finishing with two saves.
