Johnson and Callahan win major GSAC Awards

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The GSAC held it's fall sports awards banquet on the campus of Salem College this evening to celebrate the 2014 Women's Soccer All-Conference award winners. Salem's Tarryn Johnson swept the Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year awards while her coach, Jay Callahan was named Coach of the Year.

Taryn Johnson (pictured at right), a freshman forward from Sacramento, Calif., took the league by storm in 2014 to win both Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors. She led the conference in both goals and points, racking up 13 goals and 6 assists for a season total of 32 points. Johnson tallied half her points in contests versus GSAC foes with 5 goals and 6 assists in those league battles. The first-year also showed a flair for the dramatic en route to capturing the major awards by leading the conference in game winning goals with four on the campaign.

Jay Callahan guided Salem to their third consecutive regular season title and a 16-4 overall record in 2014. In his eighth year as the head coach of the Spirits soccer program, Callahan has led his squad to 5 straight seasons with at least 10 wins, and 6 of the last 7 seasons. He was selected as the Great South Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013 and was named the 2008 NCAA Association of Division III Independents (AD3I) Coach of the Year. This marks Callahan's third consecutive GSAC Coach of the Year honor.
