Soccer downs USCAA National #1 WV Tech

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College soccer team defeated the United States Collegiate Athletic Association nationally #1 ranked team of West Virginia Tech 3-2 today. Jordan Lanier scored in the first overtime for the golden goal. The Spirits are now 7-2 overall and 6-0 at home, while WV Tech falls to 7-2 overall.

The game was played through strong winds and heavy rainfalls from Hurricane Joaquin. Salem scored in the 34th minute after Tarryn Johnson took a pass from Morgan Canepa and beat a couple Tech defenders, before slotting in the goal. Salem held a 9 to 2 shot advantage at the break.

In the second half, Salem went against the wind. Tech scored twice on set pieces in the first 21 minutes of the half. Salem had to battle through sideways rain, and Hannah Huskey hit a strong shot into the upper corner to tie the game in the 71st minute. Over the final 19 minutes, Salem had several chances to win, including a Morgan Canepa shot off the crossbar.

In the first overtime, Lanier took a Maddie Crumpton pass and beat the Tech center-back and goalie for the win in the 98th minute. Kimmi Templeton finished with 3 saves in goal for the win. Salem had a 22-8 shot advantage and a 6-5 corner kick advantage. 

The Spirits open up Great South play next Saturday when they travel to Agnes Scott.
