Soccer opens season with win

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College soccer team opened their season with a win in a battle of the number three pre-season seeds in the USA South East and West Divisions. After a scoreless first half, Salem scored three quick goals to break open the game in a 3-1 win. Salem is now 1-0, and Ferrum is 0-1.

The first half saw several near misses from the Spirits. In the scoreless half, Salem had a 12-6 shot advantage. 

Salem got on the board in the 52nd minute on a Hannah Huskey goal off of a Martha Santos corner kick. Brooke Bukas scored 12 minutes later, and Morgan Canepa scored on an unassisted goal less than three minutes after the second goal. Ferrum was able to get one back in the 80th minute on a set-piece by Chloe Hudson. 

Kimmi Templeton and Hannah Wagner picked up the win in goal for the Spirits. Salem held a 22-15 shot advantage for the game. 

Salem will play their first road game of the season on September 6th at Eastern Mennonite at 4:30.
