FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The USA South Athletic Conference has released the 2018 women's soccer coaches poll where the Spirits are projected as second in the East Division. Salem received three first place votes in the division where each of the top five teams received at least one vote in this category.
Salem is coming off of a 13-4 season and finished as co-East Division Regular Season Champions. For the 2018 season, the Spirits will see new leadership as Octavia Saunders was named head coach over the summer.
The defending USA South champs Methodist University took the top spot in the East Division with 41 total points and two first place votes. Meredith College was voted third in the division with 39 points and one first place vote. Pfeiffer University took fourth in the poll and Greensboro College was selected fifth.
Pfeiffer University was welcomed into the conference last season after reclassifying from Division II. This season they can receive Regular Season Championship accolades, but are not eligible for postseason play until full DIII membership.
Maryville College and Piedmont College sit atop the poll in the West Division as they tied for first.
The Salem season is set to begin on Friday, August 31st as the team is on the road against Salisbury.
