Soccer Takes Home Opener 2-1 Over Bruins

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem College soccer team claimed victory number one of the 2018 season taking down the Bruins of Bob Jones University 2-1.

First Half

Salem came out of the locker room with good momentum out shooting the Bruins 10-0 in the first 10 minutes of the contest. The Spirits would shoot the ball nine more times before BJU sent their first ball towards the net. With exactly 11 showing on the board, all of the shooting paid off as Hope Morrison received the ball from Ellie Montes. The keeper was unable to react in time as Morrison scored which put Salem up 1-0.  

Second Half

The second half began and 32-seconds later, Montes struck the ball past the keeper to extend the Salem lead. The Bruins would get a late call in the box allowing a PK with 5:33 remaining in the game. The shot was good and put the score to 2-1 in favor of Salem. A lighting delay would stall the game for 30-minutes, but Salem had done what they needed to win the game. 

Salem Standouts

-Ellie Montes was involved in both scoring plays in the contest giving her an assist and a goal.

-The goal from Hope Morrison set the spark as she netted her first of the year. 

Notes

 The Salem College Athletics Department debuted #DoransDomain at the contest which provided a new, exciting student section named after the president of the college.
