Spirits Soar Over Meredith 4-0

Salem College Women's Soccer team exploded into Conference play at home with a 4-0 win over Meredith on Sunday for their first USA South contest of the season.  Salem took advantage of play scoring quickly in the seventh minute of the match from Senior Katie Fretwell.  The Stafford, VA. Native tapped the ball into the back of the net off a Hannah Huskey header from Salem's first corner kick of the game. Junior Courtney Chaplin's unbelievable strike in the 21st minute off an assist from Ellie Montes allowed the spirits to jump to a 2-0 lead.  Rounding out the first half, Salem secured a direct free-kick outside the edge of the Meredith penalty box and Junior Alyssa Denkovich chipped the goalkeeper in the upper corner of the goal to make it 3-0.

In the second half Senior Maddie Crumpton polished off the game in the 71st minute with a beautiful finish into the top corner to round out the score 4-0.  Hannah Wagner earned the win in goal for Salem recording 10 saves on the day.

In speaking with Salem Head Coach, Octavia Saunders, she proudly stated, "our team really pulled together today and came out with a fighting mentality to bring it to Conference play, now we recover, rest up and prepare for Wednesday's game against Averett".

The Spirits will be back to action on Wednesday, October 3rd on the road at Averett University kick-off at 4 pm in Danville, VA.
