Spirits Head to Guilford for Match with Quakers

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Just four days after posting a 2-1 victory over Bob Jones in the season opener, the Salem soccer team heads to Greensboro for a clash with Guilford at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

The Salem soccer team picked up its 10th season opening victory in the program's 12-year NCAA history on Saturday, Aug. 31, when it downed Bob Jones 2-1 in Greenville, S.C. The combination of 14 shots (six on goal) and Jordan Tomberlin in net, who tallied one save in the match, allowed Salem to move to 5-2 all-time on the road in season openers.

The match marks the season opener for the Quakers.

PREVIEWING THE COMPETITION

Guilford (6-10 Overall / 4-6 ODAC, 2018): Guilford was tabbed to finish 10th in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's soccer coaches poll that was released on August 27th.

Guilford head coach Stephanie Webb starts her third season with 17 letter-winners and six starters back from last season's unit that finished 6-10 overall and 4-6 in league action.

Kelsey Reilly and Emily Shephard both contributed eight points for Guilford in 2018. Reilly, now a senior, had three goals and two assists for the Quakers last year. Shepard, a sophomore, netted two goals and four helpers as a freshman.

Aubrey Gunther and Morgan Malikowski return after splitting time at the goalkeeper position last year. Gunther had a 2.20 goals-against average and made 64 saves in 859 minutes as a freshman. Malikowski, now a junior, posted a 3-1 record, had two shutouts and a 1.22 GAA last season.
