Salem Concludes Five-Match Road Swing at Sweet Briar

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem soccer team concludes its season-long five-match road swing on Wednesday, Sept. 11, when it squares off against Sweet Briar at 4:30 p.m.

The Spirits (2-2) are coming off a weekend split against USA South Conference members Covenant and Agnes Scott. Salem began the weekend slate by claiming a 5-4 win over Covenant after Martha Santos punched the game-winning goal past goalkeeper Lucy Sandhoff with 88:04 on the clock. On Sunday, the Spirits finished the game with 21 shots (14 shots on goal) against Agnes Scott, but it was a hat trick by the Scotties' Myah Johnson resulted in the 3-2 setback for Salem.

Salem continues to be led offensively by Ellie Montes, who has accounted for eight points (four assists / two goals) in the first four matches. Montes came through with five points against Covenant, handing out three assists to go along with a goal, resulting in her best single-match point total of the early season. She is followed closely by Ellie Montes and Baylee Greenwood, who have four points apiece by virtue of a pair of goals.

Jordan Tomberlin (2-1) has started three of the four matches in goal for Salem, making 11 saves (.579 save percentage) while surrendering eight opponent goals. Teammate Hannah Wagner (0-1) made her first start of the season on Sunday, versus Agnes Scott, posting five saves along the way to a .625 save percentage.

Sweet Briar (0-3) remains in search of its first win of the season after a series of setbacks to Mary Baldwin (Aug. 30), Notre Dame (Md.) (Sept. 4) and Christendom (Sept. 7). The Vixens have been outscored by a combined score of 9-0 in those contests, surrendering 78 shots (45 shots on goal) on the season. Sweet Briar is led individually by Olivia Peete, who has made three shots (two shots on goal).
