Salem Soccer Hosting William Peace on Tuesday Afternoon

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem soccer team goes in search of its third home win of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 15, when the Spirits play host to William Peace at 4 p.m. on Varsity Field in a clash of USA South Conference foes. The match will feature the fourth-place (Salem) and fifth-place (William Peace) teams from the USA South East Division standings.

The Spirits (7-5-1, 3-2-0 USA South) return to the Triad after splitting their last two matches against Pfeiffer (L, 0-1) and N.C. Wesleyan (W, 3-1) on Oct. 9 and Oct. 12, respectively. Salem, which has a 2-2-1 mark at home in 2019, posted both wins by virtue of a shutout against Emory & Henry (2-0) and Averett (4-0).

Salem has scored 24 goals in 13 matches, attempting 201 shots (111 shots on goal) at a rate of 15.5 shots per match. The Spirits have tallied 11 goals against a total of five USA South Conference opponents, attempting a total of 83 shots (46 shots on goal) in the process.

Junior standout Ellie Montes continues to lead the way for the Salem lineup with 12 points, scoring a team-high four goals to go along with a team-best four assists. Five others are tied for second on the team in goals (three), including Courtney Chaplin, Rachel Black and Madison Green, who scored one goal each in Salem's recent triumph over N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The Salem defense has limited the opposition to 22 goals over the course of the season, surrendering 122 shots (69 shots on goal). League opponents have been limited to four goals against the Spirits, taking 33 shots (15 shots on goal) in the process.

The goaltending tandem of Hannah Wagner (4-3-1) and Jordan Tomberlin (3-2-0) have anchored the Salem defensive attack. Wagner leads the way with 33 saves (.786 save percentage), while Tomberlin has accounted for 13 saves.

William Peace (6-7-1, 2-2-0 USA South) has split its last six matches and comes to Winston-Salem after dropping a 2-0 decision to Methodist on Saturday, Oct. 12. The Pacers have scored 28 goals on 247 shot attempts (129 shots on goal) in 14 matches this season. William Peace has converted 18 goals in 98 shots on goal against league opponents. Raine Greene is responsible for the team lead in goals (11), seven more than teammate Rachel Alford.

Kasey Wilkins has controlled the net for the Pacers, making a team-high 27 saves en route to a 3-2-0 mark, which includes one shutout.
