Montes Scores Pair in 2-1 Win Over William Peace

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Ellie Montes had the first two-goal match of her career and provided offensive punch that led the Salem soccer team past visiting William Peace by a 2-1 margin on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Varsity Field. The victory moves the Spirits to 8-5-1 overall and 4-2 in USA South Conference action.

Montes, who entered the match with a team-best four goals this season, knotted the score at one-all when she drove home a rebound shot which bounced off William Peace netminder Kasey Wilkins at the 12:43 mark of the contest.

The sharpshooting junior came through with her second goal of the afternoon, sixth of the season, just before halftime as Salem grabbed the 2-1 advantage. Teammate Martha Santos found Montes from two yards out for the game-winning score.

The lone goal for William Peace (6-8-1, 2-3 USA South) came off the foot of Raine Greene, who found the back of net after the shot ricocheted off the right goal post past Salem goalkeeper Jordan Tomberlin.

Salem closed the match with 27 shots after attempting 20 in the opening frame, while the Pacers managed seven shots over the course of the afternoon, including two in the first half. The Spirits attempted 17 shots on goal as opposed to just four shots on goal by William Peace.

Montes attempted a match-high 10 shots, including seven shots on goal, while Amy Bounds had three shots on goal for Salem. The trio of Kim Sephaphathi, Alyssa Denkovich and Rachel Black finished with two shots on goal each for the Spirits.

Jordan Tomberlin picked up her fourth win of the season for Salem, making three saves along the way. Kasey Wilkins finished with 15 saves for William Peace in the setback.
